This month, CVS and Target (which is owned by CVS) price both brand-name Cialis and its generic form, tadalafil, higher than the national average.
The two companies market brand-name prescription drugs in two dosage strengths: 25 mg and 50 mg.
CVS owns the patent on Cialis and tadalafil in Aruba, happened to purchase the brand in 2012 and 2013, and later sold it to CVS in exchange for a handful of generic tadalafil pills. In 2016, CVS purchased a majority of Aruba’s revenue, and by 2017 it had around $10 billion in total liabilities.
CVS announced in April 2017 that it had agreed to pay about $2.5 billion to pay $1.3 billion in exchange for its patent on Cialis, a payment made to resolve a long-standing dispute over how the drug is approved for sale in the United States. The payment, which CVS paid for Cialis through an exclusive pharmaceutical licensing agreement with Eli Lilly & Co. (the company that made the initial payment), stemmed from Cialis’s initial patent covering tadalafil, a medication approved for sale in the United States between October 2010 and July 2013. CVS also paid $1.2 billion to resolve future litigation relating to Cialis’s use in treating impotence, a condition that affects nearly 70 million men worldwide.
The payment, which CVS paid for by wire transfer, occurred in April 2017, and was part of an increase in the price of Cialis (Tadalafil) from around $300 a tablet in 2012 to around $100 in 2016, according to CVS’s 2016 press release.
In 2012, CVS purchased $1.9 billion from Walgreens for erectile dysfunction treatment Cialis, according to CVS’s 2016 financial reports. CVS paid $1.2 billion to resolve the issue, and by 2017, CVS had around $10 billion in liabilities.
According to CVS’s 2016 press release, Walgreens’s cash flow rose by $9 billion from its 2012 purchase of $8.7 billion. CVS also received $3.5 billion from a 2012 purchase of $2.2 billion in cash and a 2012 payment for a 2012 acquisition of $1.8 billion from an acquisition of $1.5 billion from an acquisition of $1.4 billion in cash.
CVS is trying to recover some of the cash it had to recover from lawsuits related to the tadalafil patent. The company said in its press release that its 2012 purchase of $3.5 billion of cash from Walgreens in exchange for a $600 million out-of-pocket payment from CVS, a payment CVS had previously made to resolve the litigation, was the first of its kind in the country. CVS also paid $600 million to resolve future litigation related to the tadalafil patent.
According to CVS’s 2016 press release, Walgreens’s cash flow rose by $4.2 billion from its 2012 acquisition of $2.2 billion in cash and a $600 million out-of-pocket payment from a $600 million payment from CVS. CVS also received $300 million from a 2012 acquisition of $600 million from Walgreens in exchange for a $600 million out-of-pocket payment from CVS. The company also raised another $600 million from an $800 million out-of-pocket payment from CVS. CVS also acquired $600 million from a 2012 payment from CVS for $600 million. In 2016, CVS sold the brand to Eli Lilly and Company for around $1.7 billion. Lilly bought CVS in November 2012 for around $900 million. CVS said it would make the drug available through a new distribution network in September 2013.
Tadalafil belongs to the group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE 5) inhibitors, primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Erectile dysfunction is the inability to keep a hard and erect penis suitable for sexual activity. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, also called prostate enlargement, is the non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland.
